Trendbenders
On February 7, 2006, Step Up Tulsa! stakeholders identified five major goals or trendbenders that the initiative will target for change. The trendbenders rely on the following vision statement as the foundation for action.

VISION: Tulsa is a world-class cosmopolitan region with a rich heritage, abounding natural resources, thriving business and industry, a firm educational foundation and citizens committed to making a difference in our communities. Tulsans understand and embrace the spirit that combines our regional bond.

Bullet points are suggested strategies; they are not inclusive or necessarily part of the final plan.

  • Weave "Tulsa Pride" and arts and culture throughout the trendbenders.
  • Safe communities are an outcome of pride, economic development and education.
  • Welcoming family and faith communities are integral to our communities.
The following trendbenders are not presented in order of importance; they are all equally vital to improving the Tulsa region.

Trendbender 1: Make the Tulsa region an international destination
Develop a sense of place that is unique to Tulsa, will add to the quality of life and play a primary role in attracting talent and greatly expanding tourism. People will want to live, work and play here.

  • Build an iconic community gathering space where we can gather and share activities together.
  • Coordinate a master plan for the urban core, including the Arkansas River, the Central Business District and other neighborhoods and areas unique to Tulsa.
  • Enhance and beautify the region through green spaces, playgrounds, walking and bike paths, etc.
  • Make arts and culture an integral piece of Tulsa in all public spaces.
Susan Neal and Ken Busby will chair the planning for this trendbender.

Trendbender 2: Instill pride in all Tulsans
Make every Tulsa resident a stakeholder and an active participant in community affairs. Acknowledge our history and incorporate it into the heritage that makes Tulsa unique. Gain integrity and pride by understanding our diverse cultures as we move to create the Tulsa of the future.

  • Brand a Tulsa identity.
  • Increase voter participation.
  • Implement volunteer programs that promote Tulsa as a "cool city."
  • Build on our diversity as an asset.
  • Succeed in making the Tulsa region an international destination.
Hannibal Johnson will chair the planning for this trendbender.

Trendbender 3: Significantly increase the high school graduation rate in the region
Graduate a significantly increased student rate from high schools so that each graduate has the skills necessary to succeed in the work place, to provide for a more stable family structure, and to move forward in obtaining advanced educational degrees, which will further solidify Tulsa as a city with a knowledgeable workforce.

  • Provide the highest quality education to every 0-18 year old through equity, excellence and financial support.
  • Resurrect drama, art and shop classes.
  • Create informational educational opportunities outside of school.
  • Consider many educational options such as year round schools, mentoring and quality after-school activities as part of the learning environment.
  • Community-wide Tulsa history curriculum.
  • Proportionally expand access to licensed child-care two and three Star accredited facilities.
  • Stimulate the recruitment and retention of quality child-care workers and teachers.
  • Provide free high quality birth to 4 year-old educational and health programs.
  • Focus on middle and high school education.
  • Provide career education and exposure so students understand the importance of education.
  • Provide tutoring and after school programs for those students who lag behind their grade level.
  • Provide additional alternative schools and programs for students who do not function well in large environments.
  • Provide social/emotional support programs so high school students can be successful.
  • Develop strategies for higher education and technology.
  • Build on the strength of having two medical schools.
  • Be the community of choice for educators.
  • Compensate teachers adequately.
  • Pay for merit.
  • Upgrade educational facilities to provide excellent facilities.
  • Continue to provide continuity of access to education from high school to next educational step and to career path.
  • Communicate with local industry to aid in transition.
Susan Harris will chair the planning for this trendbender.

Trendbender 4: Support tangible & sustainable economic development
Build our economic future by actively supporting public/private initiatives that sustain and develop business and industry and focus on retention and recruitment of quality human talent.

  • Attract national funding for Research and Development to position Tulsa as a leader in university-led research.
  • Support the infrastructure to form a University Research Consortium.
  • Include arts and athletics as assets.
  • Access to affordable health care and transportation is an important component of economic development.
  • Attract capital for start up companies.
Darcy Melendez will chair the planning for this trendbender.

Trendbender 5: Position Tulsa to become the healthiest region in the nation
Radically change the direction of Tulsa’s decreasing mortality rate by reducing the behaviors that cause chronic health conditions leading to early death.

  • Access to health care is now a disparity in our communities. Provide accessible, quality health care for all.
  • Develop strategies to promote health through schools.
  • Teach healthy nutrition, exercise and behavioral habits throughout the school years.
  • Reinstate physical education classes in all educational institutions.
  • Promote safety in the family structure.
  • Increase the numbers of FQHC school-based clinics.
  • Support an ongoing public health campaign that demonstrates healthy nutrition, exercise and behavioral habits.
  • Focus on new innovations such as 24/7 urgent care facilities.
  • Cut the smoking rate in half.
  • Align obesity rates of Tulsans to or below the national average.
  • Increase the activity levels of all Tulsans through families, fun and education.
  • Work with state legislature to approve a public hospital in Tulsa area.
